The Color Study Drops Blazing Rock Single ‘Future Past Present Tense’
Scott Oliphant is filled with big ideas and thoughts. Particularly when it comes to the songs he creates under the moniker The Color Study, his extensive conceptual process results in narrative tracks that speak earnestly. With the project’s self-titled debut, he established a trend that he’s carrying on with their upcoming album ‘Future-Past-Present Tense’.
‘Future-Past-Present Tense’ takes a turn for the more heady and existentially philosophical, though still in some aspect touching on the impact inter personal relationships can leave. The band’s self-titled debut record was purposefully weighed down by the sadness of a relationship lost. He started thinking about the dynamics of these relationships and how even the smallest interactions have the power to alter someone’s life, how they will live, and whether or not they will experience love. To illustrate how an interaction that hasn’t even happened yet could affect who you are in the present and how you’ll remember your past, that is how the album’s title came to be.
The album’s title track, which focuses on how interconnections can cause chaos in one’s life, best captures these feelings. An explosion of sound is created by the horns and slow acoustics, which is comparable to realizing the impact that a person or circumstance has had on you.
“How many times have we crossed paths? How many lines run in parallel but never come together?”
Only a few seconds into the song, Oliphant poses a lyrical query. Although everyone’s responses to these questions will vary, the resonance is the same whether or not you believe in fate, destiny or serendipity, you never know who or what might change your life.
