Independent country artist Samantha Rae shows off her impeccable musicality in her debut album, The High Road, released this July 26. Written, produced, and recorded with her creative partner Jay DellIsola and mixed by Grammy-winner Chad Carlson in Nashville, the album is a striking blend of modern and classic country, with hints of rock and pop.
The High Road opens with “Taking Me Down, immediately grabbing attention with its engaging riff and catchy drums. Rae’s deep voice exudes confidence and depth as she hooks us in a very relatable story of love gone awry.
“Pinocchio” takes a darker turn with trailing organ wails and jittery percussion, creating an eerie, haunting vibe. Rae’s low-range, grave vocals fit the mood perfectly as she confronts deception and manipulation head-on.
The heart of the album, “Where You Are,” pulls down the walls with a delicate arrangement of swelling strings and a tender piano melody. Rae’s voice softens here, becoming more vulnerable as she sings, “But I know it’s been too long/And I’ve gone too far/Just tell me where you are.”
“Back To You” is a highlight with its carefree euphoria rippling with Rae’s voice soaring in excitement over thumping drums and shimmering melodies. This track captures the feeling of returning to a former lover despite the odds.
The High Road closes on a thoughtful and endearing note with “Time.” Opening with the nostalgic background noise of children playing, the song transitions into guitar strumming over the soulful organ. Rae is accompanied by ethereal backing harmonies as she soars in the chorus, singing about embracing life without regrets.
The High Road is a strong debut that establishes Samantha Rae as a force in the independent country scene. She’s coming to show off her confidence live very soon. So stay in the loop!
