The Silent North drops blazing new track ‘Telescopes’
‘Telescopes’, the debut track from Scottish multi-instrumentalist Paul Russell’s instrumental solo project The Silent North, is meant to be the first in a trilogy of songs with influences from space exploration. The first single, ‘Oscillations’, was followed by ‘Fragments’, and they all have an experimental electronica feel with lo-fi chill beats and hints of post-rock guitar. Often, these sounds are altered beyond what was intended, creating kaleidoscopic sound waves that are similar to the most subdued and melodic work of Boards of Canada.
The song ‘Telescopes’ is a sonic allegory for journeys into a world outside of our own where the imagination knows no bounds. Before lighter inflections indicate movement in the dark, the main melody captures the stillness of the vast nothingness of the cosmos. All of this intensifies to a cacophony of sounds as the night sky is illuminated by planets and stars, and space is filled with a neon sea.
‘Telescopes’ has received attention from a variety of sources, most notably from BBC Introducing and the Amazing Afternoons show on Amazing Radio UK with Frankie Francis. It has been heavily played on other local and internet radio stations across the nation, including Chris Watts’ electronica program In the Moog, Lucas Gil’s Supernova Show on Glitterbeam UK, and Joe Figueira’s Manchester FM.
