Independent indie rock band Washing Machina brings the best of the 90s with their latest album, The Spontaneous Splendid. With each track, the band chases you back to the alternative rock era with guitar-driven melodies.
Opening with “Steampunker,” Washing Machina sets the tone for the album with sweet and syrupy guitar melodies. The upbeat introduction, coupled with high-spirited vocals singing the chorus, “I am a steampunker now,” gets you feeling carefree as you trust the process with the music.
“Daydream Team” kicks off with deep, groovy guitars that steadily build momentum before erupting into a chaotic force of driving rhythms and gritty riffs. The song’s dynamic shifts and suspenseful build-up are bound to keep you on the edge of your seats.
“October” unfolds with nostalgic, dreamy chiming, paving the way for pounding drums and shimmering guitars with big bends that evoke a longing for days gone by. The rich, lush vocals, layered with vibrant backing harmonies, convey the struggle to remain true to oneself amidst life’s changes.
Coming up tenth is the culmination of “Ben Ruthie,” which begins with a rushing sound before Washing Machina clears the air with steely riffs. With distorted instrumentation and ethereal vocals depicting introspection, the singer muses, “Is it the right thing? Is it the easy thing?” leaving us wondering as we wander about.
For a debut album, The Spontaneous Splendid does its job very well in representing what Washing Machina is about and also what the 90s sounded like. Listen to The Spontaneous Splendid on Spotify!
