Gabriel Byrd’s latest single, “Under a Mango Tree,” is a captivating tapestry of folk, classical, experimental, and progressive rock influences.
The piece opens with mesmerizing guitar plucks, layered to create a hypnotic and complex rhythm. These steely, sharp chords are then softened by the warm, gentle flow of flutes, bringing a touch of whimsy and wistfulness. Very reminiscent of a classic Disney movie soundtrack or a folksy bard ballad, they build anticipation for a sensitive song.
“Under a Mango Tree” progresses with shimmering strums and riffs. The chords become more intricate and they build before the bridge enters. The instruments burst forth and rattle intensely with their steely chords building and shimmering in a driving groove. The flutes rise above the fray and surge with a cinematic passion leading to a release.
The uphill drive halts its possessed energy and lets the relaxation wash over the instrumental till it culminates in a wistful melancholy. The final notes leave us with a sense of peace and wonder as if we’ve just emerged from a captivating dream.
Byrd’s musical influences like Robbie Basho, Jimmy Page and Egberto Gismonti all shine through. Ultimately, “Under a Mango Tree” is a unique creation that shows us how creative the one-man show is as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer. Turns out, it was also mastered by the legendary Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. This makes “Under a Mango Tree” a must-listen.
