Unreal by TONYC: Review
Jake Benner is the German DJ and music producer known as TONYC. He creates various kinds of EDM and Electronic Music, including House, Trap, and Drum & Bass. TONYC became a reality in 2012. Jake’s high school DJing at parties sparked his interest in making original material, which was pursued immediately. The musician recorded the track “Unreal” in his private studio in Freiburg, Germany. “Unreal” is filled with layers of Dark synth, a bit of dubstep, and just all-around incredible bass drops.
“Unreal” is mind-bending electronic fusion at its best. Mixing an abundance of sounds and vocal progressions to form a unique digital escape. What piqued my interest was the consistency of the synths and the build-up to the bass drop. There is a wonderful synergy between the instrumentation of the verse sections and the higher tempo segments. Everything feels like a party, but at the same time, you might as well just sit quietly in a room and focus on the musical elements present in the track. “Unreal” has this mysterious element to it, it manages to create a musical space where the synthesizers pertain to an ambient vibe one minute, and then the next it’s an all-out war of EDM.
Having some subtle 80’s synthwave stored in the track delighted me. I’ve been a huge follower of various electronic music producers, especially in the synthwave genre solidifying that vintage appeal. But, as for “Unreal”, it certainly has a personality of its own with some stellar experimental vocal sections and energetic beats to get your heart pumping.
