Sophie Cantier’s song “Va” unfolds as a tender, introspective journey that invites listeners to pause and reflect on the beauty and complexity of life. Created during the 51st ASTAFFORT Meetings, guided by Francis Cabrel and the lyricist Julien m’a dit, the track was recorded live in a piano-and-voice setting at Julien Lebart’s studio in Rivesaltes. Inspired by iconic French artists like Véronique Sanson, Barbara, and Benjamin Biolay, “Va” pays homage to the rich tradition of French chanson, weaving together simplicity and emotional depth.
The song opens with a delicate piano melody that feels almost like a conversation in itself, every note resonating with a poignant clarity. As the piano flows, Cantier’s voice emerges—deep, somber, and rich with introspection. Her delivery is slow and measured, each word filled with weight and purpose, drawing the listener into her reflections as if they’re her own private musings. Her voice, full and enveloping, wraps around the simple, stripped-back melody, creating a space for the lyrics to breathe and resonate. With each phrase, she captures an honest vulnerability, allowing the listener to feel the nuance in every line, as though she’s inviting us into her own quiet reverie.
“Va” found an audience even beyond music circles, drawing the attention of journalist Julien Hérichon, who spotlighted it on France Télévision. It also forms part of Cantier’s second album, Songez, released in March 2024. Listen to Sophie Cantier’s latest single to feel the beauty of simplicity for yourself.
