Surrey-based psychedelic duo West Wickhams has released their latest EP, Vivre Sa Vie. This psych-rock duo, Jon Othello and Elle Flores, from Tresco on the Isles of Scilly, gets their inspirations from the best classic Gothic novels to rock ‘n’ roll autobiographies. With their unique inspirations, they have brought forth this psych-rock experience that is both eclectic and immersive.
The opener, “I am Sparkling Cyanide” sets the psychedelic ambiance with shimmering guitar tones. As the guitar chimes through the track the thumping backbeat oomphs it up. The dreamy and hypnotic atmosphere draws listeners into the duo’s sonic universe.
“Carla Suspiria” continues the psychedelic journey with hazy vocals echoing in reverb. The tuning and riffing guitars give the track an ethereal quality, making us imagine an otherworldly sonic landscape. The blend of atmospheric vocals and instrumental intricacies showcases West Wickhams’ ability to craft a unique and immersive sonic experience.
“At the Cinema” kicks off with thumping drums, leading into hooky guitar rhythms that glimmer with a groove. The track embodies a cinematic quality and evokes imagery that aligns with the title.
The final track, “Damned Defiant!,” offers an immersive and relaxing experience, like something I would call a rock lullaby. The soothing yet defiant tone creates a paradoxical atmosphere, allowing the listener to sink into the music’s rich textures. It serves as a thoughtful conclusion to the album.
West Wickhams shows us how they meld their literary influences into a cohesive and distinctive sound in Vivre Sa Vie.
