Volca by Domax: EP Review
Spontaneous rhythm and an eccentric groove collide in Domax’s EP “Volca.” The artist’s musical inspiration arrive from jazz, electronica, funk, and a bit of trip-hop as well. All these flavorful genres come together to form this five-track collection, and I couldn’t be more excited to dive right into it!
The melodic persona of Domax is absolutely lit. They made a strong impression with a fire opening in the self-titled track. A psychedelic tune enters the mix courtesy of the synthesizers, and a hip-hop beat pattern keeps the flow consistent. Later on, the sci-fi-themed cadence forms in “Run”, ultimately it pays homage to the Star Trek movies and Hans Zimmer’s score in Interstellar. The synthesizer sequences are launched full-throttle and a pulsating beat keeps the energy intact. It’s a full-blown melodic force from start to finish and pretty invigorating to the senses.
After the rollercoaster of emotions from the previous single, we land on the steady pace of “More Time.” A 1980s-inspired rhythm segment plays out where the synthesizers have that nostalgic widespread frequency, and tagging along are funky percussions. So far, the drumming facets of this entire EP impressed me the most. There’s a dazzling individual behind all that magic and never failed to amaze me. The ending track, “Chief” is where the elements of trip-hop arrive in a delightful format. With a head-bopping bassline and dynamic synths, this ending tune was the perfect sendoff to Domax’s gripping EP.
