Royal Blues’ latest single “Way Down Low” hits like a shot of whiskey, smooth at first, then burning with grit and wild energy all the way down. This rollicking number barrels through Americana, blues, bluegrass, and rock with the reckless joy of a Friday night that turns into a story you’ll be telling for years. It’s loud, unfiltered, and unmistakably alive.
The track opens with a tight, stomping rhythm, where frenetic drums and raw, gritty guitar riffs immediately pull you into the chaos. On the other hand, Stu “Big Souts” Souter’s vocals are a force. His thick, animated tone and clear, strong and swaggering voice brings the spirit of Howlin’ Wolf and Johnny Cash into the present. Backing him up are the seamless three-part harmonies of Labhaoise, Bella, and Ana, who add a soulful, feminine contrast that lifts the song out of pure rowdiness and into something more textured. Their “Ooo”s, paired with rhythmic handclaps, create a breath of space that highlights just how tight the band’s arrangement really is.
Despite its rowdy surface, “Way Down Low” carries an emotional undercurrent. Written in memory of Silvie, a beloved family member, the track becomes a tribute as much as a party anthem. “We raise our glasses, not to forget, but to remember,” says Big Souts.
Following their success with “Everybody Knows,” featured on Amazon Prime and Apple TV, Royal Blues give us a good time once again. Check ‘em out on YouTube with their music video on “Way Down Low.”
