American pop artist Katie Belle explores LA in her latest single, “West Coast” released this July 26.
“West Coast” opens with a relaxing piano gently stroking its keys into the immersive space. The immersion is only doubled with Katie Belle’s voice. Her voice is soft, delicate, slow and careful. She sings melancholically but dreamily about leaving the East Coast for the West. The immersion slowly elevates with heightening theatricality in the chorus and Belle’s vocals start gaining liberty. It’s almost like the precursory moment when an angel slowly gains wings and takes flight.
The bridge comes with a building beat which resembles that upsurge of thrill when you are finally experiencing the bliss of fame and luxury for yourself for the first time. It’s akin to touching gold and it makes you want to sell your soul.
Belle’s tone loses that melancholia and in its delicacy, you find the gossamer-like silkening bling that reminds you of watching the city lights from up above. The outro sums it up pretty well. Bathed in reverb and delivered with an anticipatory adrenaline rush amidst vibrant hypnotic music, she sings of how transformative her experience was, from the purity of her “fields and hills” to the artificial glow of the city and its exploitive instruments. Really makes you wonder whether she is romanticizing the journey to fame or exposing how we romanticize it.
