Coventry artist marcusCV steps into R&B’s familiar territory of hidden feelings and unanswered questions while taking an unmistakably modern route to get there. His debut EP What If I Told You, released in August, draws on the nostalgic UK R&B tradition associated with Craig David, Usher and Donell Jones, but builds its sound through an AI-assisted creative process entirely from his laptop. Rather than hiding that technology, marcusCV treats it as another instrument in a project ultimately concerned with something much older: human vulnerability.
“Best Friend” captures that tension beautifully. Gentle piano sets an intimate foundation as marcusCV’s deep voice glides smoothly through each line, confessing feelings that complicate the supposedly simple territory of friendship. A cool, understated rhythm keeps the track moving without disturbing its tenderness.
That emotional uncertainty becomes more painful in “Watching You Love Someone Else,” where longing turns into the quiet misery of watching someone you love choose another person. The heartbreak is not only romantic; the changing relationship threatens the friendship itself, making the loss feel like a double blow. It is precisely this kind of uncomfortable emotional limbo that gives the EP its identity.
Across What If I Told You, marcusCV repeatedly returns to the conversations people never have: feelings swallowed back, confessions left unsent and all those dangerous “what if” scenarios that can live in the mind for years. The AI-assisted production is therefore less interesting as a gimmick than as part of the EP’s larger question about where genuine connection comes from.
At the end of the day, marcusCV’s debut works because its technological foundation never overwhelms its emotional centre. What If I Told You is built around an old-fashioned R&B strength—the courage to admit what hurts—and gives that vulnerability a distinctly contemporary setting.
