Atlanta-based artist, Zoe Bayani gets deep and transparent in her debut album You Don’t Want Help. Released this Aug 2, it was the unfolding of a breakup, and it was the way Bayani, like so many other creatives, got her help.
The first track, “My Dog” opens with strumming guitars over wailing atmospherics which Bayani trails her thick, vulnerable voice over. The song transforms, as the beats drop and around which the music builds and engulfs us in the emotions. Perfect for leaving places and memories, while wanting connection, the opener helps us soak into the themes.
“Feels the Same” is a brooding track with heavy undertones. Bayani shows us how versatile she is with her vocal range and stylistics. The depressed among us may find a comforting place within the line, “Now I am dreaming of dying.”
Now getting on to the said-”focus” track, “Prophet” builds with brooding riffs and thumping drums, only to explode with the singer wailing into the shimmering atmosphere. Bayani carries the song with her agonizingly soaring into the aural field. The chorus, “I am not a prophet, baby, I am just a girl” really does cut a cord as though she realizes all those realizes she was being used.
“You Don’t Want Help,” our titular track, is sombre and melancholic with the atmospheric harmonies and organs setting off a relaxing mood, which only amps up with the hardening riffs. It’s like the consequences of refusing help are slowly sinking in.
Listen to the Atlanta singer-songwriter let it all out in her debut You Don’t Want Help and find solace in it yourself too.
