The Cumberland River Project, led by the talented songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Frank Renfordt, has released a vibrant and infectious single, “Your Man.” The song unfolds a concerning picture from the midst of 70s and 80s-inspired blues, soul, and rock.
“Your Man” injects the infectious energy in your nerves from the first second. The track starts with horns blowing over catchy guitar riffs, splashing cymbals, and rhythmic drums. The husky vocals lure you with a compelling persuasion, merging attraction and desire. Tender and thick female backing vocals bring a soulful sweetness to the bluesy rock track, creating a harmonious and engaging sonic landscape. Meanwhile, the bridge gives you the only space in the track with the contagious grind brought on by the guitar solo.
The Cumberland River Project gets deep with a man persuading a country girl into intimacy all the while promising to be her “Man.” In the same voice, he determinedly sings of making her “mama” cry as a connotation of the sin he’s going to make her commit and break her faith. These lyrics are so direct you know this is no “love song” but rather a concerning manipulation that still goes on. The upbeat and lively retro sound may also depict how problematic the lyrics of the actual music of the 80s often were.
Listen to The Cumberland River Project’s “Your Man” on Spotify to get your toes tapping and your head contemplating. See which side of desire and morality you present yourself in this easy, bluesy, engaging track.
