“Rely” is the duo horsebread’s latest single, released just last Dec 29, 2023. Comprised of Andrew Frazier on bass and keys and Sam McLeod on vocals and guitar, horsebread presents a fuzzy, shiny dream. With ethereal emotional vocals and hard-hitting drums, the song takes you on one hell of a ride.
Apart from its excellence and aesthetics, “Rely” is something you should look forward to simply because of the patience and meticulous energy expended on it over four years with drummer, Garret Tyler, mixer Joel Dowling, and masterer Joe Causey.
The track opens with dreamy guitars that carry a fuzzy quality, setting the stage for a musical experience that feels both unpredictable and immersive. The song seems like an unpredictable ride with the alternating of the high and low vocal ranges. The song starts with an ethereal falsetto that abruptly becomes defeated and low range, then mid-range. Right after starts the crooning in falsetto, and the song keeps alternating this way. Perhaps the singer wanted to portray their discordant emotions and wrapped them in a shimmering whirlwind.
horsebread has asserted to have been influenced by Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, and Bon Iver. Upon hearing this song, I could definitely hear the gist of their signature sounds merged with the atmospheric and experimental music in “Rely.”
Thematically, the sound of “Rely” is also very much intentionally discordant and confused. It’s probably exactly how horsebread feels about religion or other strict systems or philosophies to live life by.
Listen to “Rely” by horesbread not just for the message and the sound, but also to be inspired to express your thoughts artistically or creatively as well.
