Michael Gabriel’s “To Lose You” is less a conventional electronic song than an emotional atmosphere you can step inside. The Nova Scotia composer and producer joins forces with filmmaker and creative producer Jolene MacIntyre, who makes her musical debut through spoken word rather than traditional singing. The result is an intimate meeting point between electronic music, cinematic composition and visual storytelling—deliberately open-ended enough for listeners to attach their own memories, relationships and fears to it.
The track begins with mesmerizing, warm strings that slowly swell around MacIntyre’s reflective spoken delivery. Her voice feels close and unguarded, gradually building toward the aching sentiment of never wanting to lose someone. It feels like overhearing someone’s private thoughts at the exact moment they realize how precious something has become.
Then, almost like an emotional wave breaking, thumping and sparkly beats bustle into the arrangement. The sudden rhythmic movement gives the piece a pulse without destroying its tenderness, while piano flows gently underneath, keeping the whole composition anchored. Gabriel’s production manages to make the electronic elements feel warm and human, creating a cinematic soundscape that could easily accompany a memory unfolding in slow motion.
That blend makes “To Lose You” particularly compelling. Gabriel’s musical language draws from the atmospheric worlds associated with artists such as Moby, Brian Eno, Ólafur Arnalds, Jon Hopkins, Air, Ben Böhmer and Massive Attack, yet this collaboration adds something distinctly personal. MacIntyre’s spoken word gives the composition a narrative presence, while the music leaves enough breathing room for the listener to fill in the blanks.
The accompanying documentary-inspired music film extends that philosophy, following MacIntyre through an ordinary, reflective day and allowing everyday spaces and moments to become part of the story. Ultimately, “To Lose You” offers an emotional doorway and lets you walk through carrying your own memories.
