There is something wonderfully liberating about a song that sounds like the moment you finally leave everything behind and hit the open road. Brooklyn-based indie-folk artist and composer Elizabeth P.W. captures exactly that feeling in “Head West,” the featured song from the upcoming documentary OUT THERE: A National Parks Story. Written specifically for the film, the track is built around exploration, discovery and that irresistible itch to see what lies beyond the next bend. It also fits neatly into Elizabeth’s broader work as a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer whose music has crossed both indie and cinematic worlds.
“Head West” starts with thick, melodic guitars that immediately create a sense of forward motion without rushing the listener. Elizabeth’s voice soars above them with an easygoing, relaxed quality, giving the opening the warmth of sunlight pouring through a car window. There is a breezy confidence here, as if the destination matters less than simply being on the way.
Then the percussion enters and gives the song a welcome lift. Suddenly, the road feels wider, the horizon further away and the excitement harder to contain. Elizabeth responds by belting with greater passion and liveliness, pushing the song from gentle folk daydream into something much more expansive. Her vocal performance never loses its natural warmth, though, keeping the track grounded even as the arrangement grows.
That balance is ultimately what makes “Head West” work so well. It is cinematic without becoming overly grandiose, and uplifting without falling into sugary territory. You can practically picture the scenery changing outside the windshield as the guitars roll along and Elizabeth’s vocals rise with the anticipation of somewhere new.
Considering the song was created for a documentary about America’s national parks, its sense of movement feels especially fitting. But “Head West” is not really about geography alone. It captures that universal moment when hesitation gives way to excitement—when you finally put the car in gear, take a breath and think, let’s see where this goes.
