Katelyn Butcher has found a particularly entertaining way to call out a manchild: tell him you already have a baby, and unfortunately, it’s him. Nashville-based Butcher turns that exasperation into “You’re a Baby,” a sassy, genre-blending single that reveals just how exhausting an unequal relationship can become and how unreliable it is for any family to grow from it. Written from the experience of being treated more like a mother than a teammate, the song transforms resentment into something cheeky, catchy and surprisingly empowering.
A playful melody builds underneath Butcher’s tender, luscious high voice as she begins laying out the problem. Her partner wants her to have his baby, but her response essentially boils down to: why would she want another one when she is already taking care of him? The joke lands because Butcher refuses to stop at the punchline. She keeps pushing the “baby” idea further, portraying a grown man who expects nurturing instead of partnership and gleefully reducing his helplessness to an insult that is almost too accurate and an experience a lot of women are familiar with.
Then the rhythm starts getting restless. Jittery percussion gradually gives way to harder, steadier beats, while the keyboard keeps its catchy momentum underneath her increasingly infectious delivery. Butcher’s lines are built to stick, and before long, the song has the dangerousness of a joke you cannot stop repeating. You can hear the singalong arriving.
That accessibility is what makes the track’s sharper edge work. This song had the potential to sound cute and sweet, but she builds upon that line, portraying the reality and what a useless manchild her partner is. The humor becomes a form of boundary-setting.
Butcher wrote and sang the track, co-producing it with Aron Rosing after initially recording parts months earlier without knowing where the song was headed. Finished later in the studio, the result sounds like someone finally found the right punchline, and decided to put it on repeat.
