Accepted by Nightly Gatherings: Review
No man is an island. But at times of isolation, such as the pandemic, itโs difficult not to feel disconnected from the outside world. But at that time, Connor Johnson, who had previously dabbled in photography, returned to music as Nightly Gatherings. With the first track, โAccepted,โ thereโs little doubt heโs back in a big way this time.
โAcceptedโ is the epitome of Johnsonโs experimental approach to electronic music. It was the first track of the newly released EP that he worked on, the same month he started Nightly Gatherings. Starting off with a bright guitar riff, the song quickly establishes a bubbly, light-hearted tone that is only accentuated by the addition of synthesized instruments and a lively rhythm. There is such an airy, peaceful flow throughout the song, coming from the ethereal flutes or perhaps the sweet vocals. Speaking on the meaning of the song, he shares, โAccepted is about understanding and growth. While everything might not work out how itโs meant to, everyone can find a positive in that situation. โ If thereโs a soundtrack for happy endings, this is probably it.
Nightly Gatherings was founded in a Chico, California bedroom during the epidemic. At home, he composes, sings, records, produces, and mixes all of his music. Surprisingly, all of the guitars in the EP are samples that he sculpted and transformed to fit his creative vision. Weโre not sure what else to expect from Nightly Gatherings in the future, but weโre quite eager.
