6 Shooter by Wotts and The Desert Island Big Band: Review
Jayem, a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, and Ricky 100, a guitarist and bassist, make up both halves of the Canadian indie pop duo known as Wotts. They decided to revamp “Six Shooter,” a song originally performed by one of their favorite bands, The Desert Island Big Band, for their very first try at working with other musicians. What came out of their innovative process is the fourth single from Wotts, “6 Shooter”.
Between the two, “6 Shooter” leans more toward retro vibes with a more upbeat pop-rock groove that the band created independently from aspects of the original. The flickering guitars and steady drumbeat initiate a carefree, hazy flow, while the synths later flare into a modern mood. The vocals are laid back and have a touch of echo to them, which contributes to the song’s overall dreamy and youthful atmosphere. It’s like one of those ending sequences in the movies where you drive off-road into a blazing desert, yet you feel liberated because you know you’re riding off into the sunset. Jayem shares their own interpretation of the song as follows: “It’s easy to get disillusioned. Some people are always going to have an idea about how you should live your life, so this is a song for those that follow their gut and take the road less traveled to find happiness
The two bands decided that these two versions of the song should be on an EP so that we could have the best listening experience possible. Make sure to check it out!
