Liverpool singer-songwriter Carlos Grassot closes his ambitious four-EP project with Farewell The World, a four-track collection that turns his gaze outward, trading the intensely personal reflections of his earlier work for a pointed examination of society and the world around him. Influenced by the likes of Radiohead, Neil Young, Sam Fender and Eddie Vedder, Grassot blends rock, folk and atmospheric songwriting into music that feels earnest rather than manufactured. Recorded at Liverpool’s Crosstown Studios with producer Jon Lawton, the EP also features drums, piano, bass, backing vocals and strings, giving its intimate ideas plenty of room to expand.
“Wasting Songs” kicks things off with shimmery strumming guitars, thumping drums and sparkling cymbals. Grassot’s husky rasp cuts through with passion as he wrestles with the urge to give up on the world while still being unable to stop caring about it. The song sounds defeated, yet the very act of singing becomes a stubborn little spark of hope.
“We Won’t Be There For You” grows heavier and more despondent. Grassot delivers its message with a worn-in seriousness, while lightly echoing harmonies trail behind him, reinforcing its call for ordinary people to stand together against powerful institutions and corporations. It’s less about pointing fingers than sounding the alarm.
Then comes “The Wild,” the EP’s grandest moment. Slow guitar chords initially drift through an expansive, almost empty atmosphere before Grassot enters with soulful vocals. As the bridge arrives, rumbling drums gradually gather momentum, and he soars over the swelling arrangement. The Northern Strings add further cinematic weight, turning his metaphorical “wild”—the forces he sees as wrong with the world—into something almost mythic.
Finally, “Away On The Road” lowers the curtain gently. Grassot sings with calm acceptance, embracing simplicity and the possibility of retreating to the countryside when changing the world feels impossible. After all the anger and struggle, sometimes the road home is the answer.
