Michael Keane’s electronic project Textbook Maneuver returns with Adrenaline Slip, a record that thrives on controlled chaos while rewarding patient listening. Released as a limited run of just 100 hand-numbered vinyl copies through Life Science Records’ inaugural vinyl issue, the New Jersey producer continues to blur the lines between IDM, ambient electronica, experimental sound design, and cinematic composition.
Right from the opening track, “Birds,” Keane throws listeners into an intricate sonic ecosystem. Chirping birds mingle with deep, rumbling beats while shimmering percussion rattles beneath layers of electronic flourishes, restless strings, and fractured textures. At first, everything seems tangled together in beautiful disorder. Before long, though, those scattered pieces begin to rise, breathe, and merge into something unexpectedly fluid. The arrangement constantly evolves, swelling with glistening detail that keeps the ears busy without ever becoming overwhelming.
The album’s title track, “Adrenaline Slip,” remains its gravitational center. The piece builds momentum through shifting textures and hypnotic rhythmic movement, balancing tension with moments of dreamy release. That atmosphere becomes even more fascinating in the remix by electronic veteran μ-Ziq, who reshapes the composition into something hazier and more ethereal. Breakbeats weave through smeared, shoegaze-inspired textures, giving the familiar material a softer, dreamlike identity without losing its pulse.
Meanwhile, “Tell Them I’m Not Here, Still In Outerspace” slows everything down into a suspended state. Chilled tapping beats echo beneath droning atmospheres before shimmering frequencies and rustling electronic buzz gradually emerge, creating the sensation of floating through an endless cosmic landscape. It’s sparse, immersive, and quietly hypnotic.
What ultimately makes Adrenaline Slip so compelling is its refusal to settle into predictable patterns. Every layer feels carefully sculpted, every transition purposeful, and every sound contributes to a larger emotional architecture. Textbook Maneuver crafts electronic music that isn’t simply heard but gradually uncovered, revealing fresh details with every return visit.
