TC TENET’s “Animals” hits like a defibrillator to the chest of raw, urgent, and utterly unfiltered, modern alt-rock. Captured live with a full band in a no-overdubs session at Arcus Sounds in London, the track feels like a lightning bolt of frustration and soul, charging through themes of societal decay, false idols, and the existential rot beneath shiny surfaces.
It opens with a rolling drumbeat and swirling, distorted guitars that feel like the onset of a storm. And then, the riffs sharpen, slice, and the track fully opens up to an immersive and inescapably alive wall of sound.
TENET’s voice tears through the noise with rich, gritty and sexy defiance, dripping with tension. He sings like he is cornered by the very system he’s trying to dismantle, every lyric tinged with rebellion and existential disgust. “We’ve been left in this posh dollhouse / with the other clowns,” he snarls, slicing through the illusion of societal polish with lines that bite like satire wrapped in steel wool. The guitars grind and fuzz, warm and volatile, while the drums drive forward with the momentum that makes you feel like you’re chasing something—or being chased.
What makes “Animals” especially magnetic is how it balances tight, hypnotic control with wild, cathartic release. The bridge simmers and trails off into a cool, haunting lull, only to roar back with primal urgency. “I can’t do it,” TENET chants, until the final blow lands, “We’re all animals,” like an epiphany howled into the night.
