Vemalo’s latest single, “Outside of Me,” mixes emotional nostalgia and tender indie-folk textures like a memory wrapped in velvet. Building on the momentum of their poignant debut “Hesitate,” the band leans into a more layered, introspective sound with this release, balancing delicate instrumentation with a rich and velvety vocal performance. Co-written by Matthew Davis and Vedantha Kumar, the track is inspired by a line from a Rupert Thomson novel, evoking the overwhelming sense of life’s uncontrollable tides, especially when it comes to love, timing, and loss.
The track opens like a whisper, with warm, dreamy strums and a sweet, slow melody that floats gently before Vedantha’s deep, luscious, and heartbreakingly calm voice glides in. It immediately pulls you close, like someone letting you in on a secret. The beat gradually swells with soft thumping drums, subtle piano flourishes, and shimmering guitar lines that build a soundscape of warmth and wistfulness. Toward the end, light airy harmonies ascend like ghosts of past moments, lifting the emotional weight just as it begins to sink too deep.
Lyrically, “Outside of Me” captures the ache of missing someone who may never return, tangled in thoughts you can’t quite hold or say out loud. “Every inner thought I have / lies outside of me” becomes the emotional anchor of the song, repeated like a mantra for those trying to make peace with what was never said. There’s a sweet sadness in the recurring question, “Will I ever see you again?” that haunts him.
Produced in Paris by Jonathan Le Fevre and polished by a seasoned team, “Outside of Me” is a beautifully crafted reflection on love, loss, and the truths that linger just beyond reach. Stay tuned to Vemalo for more.
