Bold Boy’s vibrant debut EP, Any Time Or Any Place, disarms you with their honest exploration of modern love, the ache of aging, and the failing, perpetual search for connection in a world increasingly ruled by apps, algorithms, and uncertainty. Opening with “She Looked Me Up And Down,” Bold Boy wastes no time introducing their dreamy shimmer and garage-pop grit. The guitar work is chiming and immediate, while the thick vocals deliver a wry storytelling tone that unironically presents the lyrical charm. It’s a playful but relatable portrait of early flirtation, complete with awkward timing and dodged parents.
“Northern Lights” is where the emotional stakes begin to deepen. The track maintains a buoyant melodic rhythm, but the lyrics strike a nerve: “Some of my friends have kids now but I’m still on the dating scene.” Sung with a touch of exhaustion and a heavy dose of reality, the song shows what it is like to be left behind, all while still trying to swipe your way into something real.
“In The Comfort” ups the intensity sonically and emotionally. The riffs grow darker, the beats thrum louder, and the singer leans into a raw vulnerability, confessing just how available he is for love, no matter how desperate it might sound. It’s messy, endearing, and achingly human.
The closing track “Sanctuary” is the EP’s emotional crescendo. Gently picked guitar lines and lush strings give way to a slow-burning anthem of longing. As the song ends, the voice—so present in previous tracks—fades slightly beneath a wave of cinematic instrumentation, echoing the blur of hope and hurt in trying to find someone who just wants honesty and companionship.
Any Time Or Any Place is indie with punk edges, modern but timeless, and deeply, sometimes painfully, relatable. Bold Boy may still be shaping their sound, but they’ve already nailed the feeling. Check it out on Spotify.
