Been Here Ever Since by One Last Job is a poignant and introspective album that delves deep into the themes of gratitude, existentialism, and the quest for meaning in life. Created entirely by Travis Klein, the album draws inspiration from diverse influences, including The Mountain Goats, AJJ, Modern Baseball, and Phoebe Bridgers.
Recorded in Klein’s living room in Austin, TX, and masterfully mixed and mastered by Michael Briggs in Denton, TX, “Been Here Ever Since” offers a raw and intimate glimpse into Klein’s psyche.
Been Here Ever Since opens with “Been Here Ever Since, Pt. One,” setting the tone with ambient guitar work and introspective lyrics. Klein’s storytelling prowess shines as he reflects on the monotony of staying in one job or career for an extended period. “Safe Mode” is a standout track that channels Klein’s vocals, conveying urgency and unrest. The grinding riffs and hard-hitting drums add depth to the song, amplifying its emotional impact.
“Memento Mori” takes a softer approach. Klein’s voice soft and thick with passion, he sings, “Memento Mori/Is that all this has all been about?/ It’s every story.” The shimmering background music and romantic horns create a captivating atmosphere, drawing listeners into Klein’s introspective journey.
The album culminates with “Been Here Ever Since, Pt. Two,” the sequel to the opening track. With transparent lyricism and a pumping build-up, through tales of rich men gone mad, junkies, and homelessness, Klein reflects on the unique path that life carves for each individual. The narrator finally realizes the importance of gratitude, and he sings, “Wherever I am is heaven/ And I have been here ever since.”
Through Been Here Ever Since, One Last Job invites listeners to reflect on their paths and perceptions of gratitude and fate.
