Jphono1 has delivered a captivating and eclectic album with Beyond Provisional. Produced by drummer John Crouch, this album is for rock lovers. Completing the band with Crouch, are John Harrison and Alex Livingstone on vocals.
Beyond Provisional opens with “Time & Space,” a psychedelic rock track that has chiming guitars shimmering over pounding drums. The guitars only churn more and more into a hypnotic confusion. Only in the bridge, do you hear the echoing wispiness of a hazy high voice trailing amidst the daze.
“Ramkat” is another standout track on the album which opens with catchy riffs that make you bob your head, while they play in sync with the sparkly cymbals. The song turns towards a more shimmering and chiming end soon, coming off dreamy as if climbing stairs in the sky.
“Goldtop” opens with more fuzzy but more lively riffs. It veers towards a complex guitar-led groove which punchily riffs and gets us hooked in the loop.
“A New Way to Kick It,” is a highlight of the album and a perfect choice as the finale as it features relaxing soft guitar chimes and a softer rustling rhythm alongside heartfelt delivery. The vocals are rather thick, warm and clear as they sing with layered reverbed vocals singing after them like a reflecting echo while the rustling drums elevate. Nonetheless, this song too gains ground towards the end, with grit as the guitars drive alongside pounding drums.
