Having just reviewed Cali Tucker’s latest single, “Last Name,” just a while back, it was definitely a wonderful experience to go through her music video.
For those who don’t know, she was born in Phoenix and raised in Nashville, daughter of LaCosta Tucker and niece of Tanya Tucker, could easily rest on her family’s laurels, but instead, she uses the song to flip the script. Drawing inspiration from Cinderella, the track, and its cinematic video, reframe the fairytale as one of self-made success that tears off the ones from her side who once tore her down.
The music video doubles down on this liberation, with Cali cast as Cinderella, who, instead of waiting for rescue, burns down the house of her captivity. When she steps out transformed into that iconic blue gown, it’s all about self-reinvention, of how you start shining when your environment becomes free of toxins. Her mother, LaCosta, appearing as the fairy godmother, is the most endearing Easter egg ever, as it stitches back her legacy and her love, magnifying how her support has helped her push away the hardships.
Behind the song, we have Grammy-nominated G’harah “PK” Degeddingseze on the production team alongside Derek Robertson and Tricia Battani. The track sets up a dreamy atmosphere. When Cali’s low, rich, and charged voice emerges, you know this won’t be a damsel-in-distress story. She sings with conviction, as though every syllable carries the weight of generations yet insists on speaking for itself. Tucker shows that heritage may be a gift, but destiny is something you carve with your own hands. With this release, Cali Tucker redefines her lineage. Check out the sparkling music video on YouTube.
