Los Angeles veterans Chapel of Roses are back with their new EP, Cast Out to Sea, marking the resilience and the passage of time.
The title track opens with a mesmerizing soundscape with high, echoing plucks swirling around a deep hypnotism. This sets the stage perfectly for Chris E. Kelley’s vocals, which enter with a haunting, almost unsettling tone. His delivery is rife with mystery and unease, perfectly capturing the feeling of being adrift at sea.
Hints of Chapel of Roses’ punk peek through while leaning heavily on alternative rock, with shimmering guitar riffs and a rhythm section that thumps with head-bobbing infectiousness. The chorus is where things get truly exciting. Kelley lets loose with his trailing delivery of the title line, “Cast out to sea,” stretching the final word to an exhilarating shrill. The bridge turns with Kelley’s vocals dropping to a lower, thicker, almost muffled register before the music explodes its frenetic energy.
“Cast Out to Sea – Further” ventures deeper into the sonic abyss and opens your imagination by taking the original track and extending it by almost a minute and a half. A distorted, hazy melody ushers us into a blurred instrumental landscape. Here, the melody dissolves into a swirling, hypnotic instrumental field punctuated only by tapping beats. As the song progresses, the drums return, building in intensity until they eventually pace with the pulsating groove, creating a sense of hypnotic closure. This ending brings a sense of release and forward momentum.
Listen to Chapel of Roses’ powerful comeback, “Cast Out to Sea,” to find out how they have still held on to their edge.
