Edinburgh’s hottest new trio, Bicycle Trip has unveiled their new jangly power-pop, earwormy tune with their latest single, “Change Your Mind.”
Depicting the exciting but uncertain feeling of a new relationship, the song opens with a danceable sonic collusion of thumping drums and guitars riffing in perfect sync. Meanwhile, the charismatic vocals of Bicycle Trip’s frontman lead the charge. This sonic invitation leads you on to take a chance on love, a call to arms for anyone who’s ever dared to dream.
The catchy rhythm makes it easy and fun to listen to, especially the chorus. The melody burrows itself into your brain, and the line “Give me just one more try” becomes a desperate plea, sung with a playful backing vocal that echoes the sentiment.
The lyrics portray a becoming relationship halted with distance. One person has moved away, chasing dreams in a new city, while the other is left behind, clinging to the hope of a reunion. There’s a sense of playful banter in the line “Do you still hate The Beatles/Yea I love them too,” a reminder of the shared experiences that bind them together. But there’s a vulnerability beneath the surface, too.
The bridge takes a slight turn, the music staying light and upbeat while the vocalist’s voice cracks with emotion as he sings, “I adored you the most/When I was at my worst.” The honest confession shows that all the excitement comes from much-unfiltered profundity.
With “Change Your Mind” as a calling card, Bicycle Trip is a band to watch. Keep watch on their upcoming EP, Monster Songs, produced by the legendary Ken Allardyce.
