Daniela Galasso (Dani), a singer-songwriter from the San Francisco Bay Area of California, has released “Yesterday’s Story,” an indie-pop ballad about how difficult it can be to move on from the past. Dani perfectly captures the feeling of being caught in a cycle, relationship, or circumstance that should be over with lyrics like “we can’t move on, but it feels so wrong,” and “you can break me with ‘hello’.”

Taylor Swift’s “Tis the Damn Season” and Sara Bareilles’ “Between the Lines” are referenced sonically and lyrically in “Yesterday’s Story,” and the song’s yearning, nostalgic soundscape will appeal to anyone who has experienced the struggle and unhealthful cycle that comes with holding on to the past.

When questioned about where she got the idea for “Yesterday’s Story,” Dani revealed that the captivating piano riff from the song’s intro served as the initial inspiration (though it sneaks in and out throughout). Additionally, she was moved by the concept of “having the wires crossed” and wanted to convey the tension that can exist when something is both cozy and untidy. If it’s time to close a chapter in their lives, she hopes the song will encourage listeners to stand firm in their beliefs.

For “Yesterday’s Story,” Dani created the vocal arrangement and demo and recorded all of her vocals alone in her home studio. Together with guitarist Michael Costello and producer Kenny Schicks (of Basement Productions), she continued to work on the arrangement and production of the remaining portion of the song.
