Dark Passengers, the debut EP from Kingston-based band King In Yellow, showcases a haunting exploration of themes like alienation, grief, and inner darkness.Founded by Kyle McDonough and Nick Vining and joined by Mickey and Garin, the band draws inspiration from the raw post-punk and new wave sounds of the early ’80s Manchester scene, channeling the brooding energy of influences like The Smiths, Bauhaus, and Sisters of Mercy.
Dark Passengers opens with “Lucid Dream,” a track that slices through distorted haze with sharp cymbals and steady, grounded rhythms. The vocalist’s contemplative tone pulls the listener into a trance. The song captures the essence of retro new wave, layered with atmospheric darkness.
“Dark Passengers,” the title track, is hypnotic and introspective as it dives into depression and grief. Heavy guitar chords establish a foreboding mood, and as the drums kick in, tension rises, accompanied by layers of reverberating, grinding guitars.
The third track, “Hand In Fan,” shifts to a more intense beat. The singer’s voice penetrates the hazy surface with an urgent echo. Closing the EP is “Desire Path,” where King In Yellow amplifies their gritty, dark soundscape. The drums pound relentlessly, and the vocalist’s energy peaks, his voice raw and fervent as he declares a refrain with visceral passion. The track embodies a gritty resolve, leaving an indelible impression.
King In Yellow has dropped this release and ended up leaving fans excited for upcoming shows in Binghamton, NYC, and Hudson. Dark Passengers is an essential listen for fans of the genre.
