Desolate Cities by Stephen Foster: Review
Stephen Foster shares a contemplative and poetic view on life with the single Desolate Cities, extracted from his full-length project Sharing Perils. Drawing inspirations from numerous genres, it is no surprise that Stephen manages to create his own blend of alternative and folk music. As the title of his project goes, the track Desolate Cities is a metaphor itself to me, a crack aggravated by dishonesty and the impermanence of it all. Laced with a soft storytelling voice, Stephen delivers his viewpoint on life through poetic lyricism and vivid imagery; with a minimalist instrumental.
Quotable lyrics:
“All your life
Hanging from the rafters of
Eternal rest
Hanging fire
Till there isn’t anything
Left unconfessed.”
Stephen seeds in Desolate Cities a glimpse of hope, while discussing the never-stopping flow of life, and the inevitability of death. Life would always raise the question of existentialism, and it would not be the same after Desolate Cities. If you are a fan of the imaginative Sufjan Stevens and the existentialism of Bob Dylan, Stephen Foster and his full-length project Sharing Perils is a name to look forward to.
