In the Shallows, led by Welsh singer-songwriter Danni Davis, delivers a groovy, hooky track with their latest release, “Do You.” Other than the final production by Steve Rokosh, Davis co-produced the song and played guitar, bass, keys, percussion, and performed all vocals and made “Do You” a deeply personal project. The song opens with Davis’s sultry, high, and grainy voice, instantly setting a smooth and relaxed vibe.
Her delivery is captivating, drawing listeners in with each carefully crafted line. Wellington-based dream pop artist Module produced the thumping beats which keeps your head nodding throughout, while also working on the shimmering guitar chords that add a bright enchantment to the track. Harmonies gently croon in the background, giving the song a soothing, soulful texture. The witty, engaging lyrics make the song a singalong delight, while the sultry monologue in the bridge spices things up with a deeper, more personal reflection.
At its core, “Do You” is about how relationships leave behind a saga of grief and pain before the eventual healing. Davis reflects on the emotional baggage, as well as the courage required to face the harsh truths we often avoid. The recurring refrain, “Do you, do you, do you?” poses a rhetorical question that speaks to shared human vulnerability—mistakes, regret, and the longing for understanding in relationships. As the song progresses, the weight of these emotions is further amplified by the instrumentation, which, with its soulful cadence, never overwhelms the listener.
“Do You” is a compelling listen from start to finish, and sets a strong precedent for Davis’s upcoming album. In the Shallows is holding a release party of “Do You” at St Peter’s Hall, Paekākāriki, on October 12. Make sure to save the date and stay tuned!
