Dreams by Stori Brooks: Review
Stori Brooks closes her latest EP ‘We Climbed A Tree’ with a dreamlike soundscape with an aptly named song, Dreams.
Dreams is the final song of the EP and this alt hip-hop artist knows how to close it with style. Having a slight difference in style and tonality from the rest of her catalog, combining slightly distorted piano, looped synthesizers, and reverbed vocals from every direction, the song manifests a dreamlike hypnotic atmosphere. It’s like one of those dreams where you know you’re dreaming. A melancholic avant-garde RnB tune one might say.
The lyrics at first may seem simple and straightforward without the music. But the subtle melancholy in Stori’s vocal presentation and the layering of the voicings of the instruments add such complexity that you cannot but admire. The doubt, the leap of faith, the persistence, acceptance– so straightforward, yet so vague that it leaves it open for interpretation. The avant-garde style of layering and multi-directional voicing in the production adds theatrical value to the song that keeps the listener guessing and coming up with their own meaning of the song. As she writes, performs and produces her own records all by herself, this song perfectly showcases her talent, creativity and capability in all three individual aspects.
Quotable Lyrics:
“Am I here
or am I there
it has always been so clear
although the chips may fall
there’s always been that call
to try again, again, and once again”
