Em Beihold Tops the Emerging Artists Chart With “Numb Little Bug,” Her Breakthrough Single.
Em Beihold, a bustling Los Angeles singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, has released a new tune and music video called “Numb Little Bug,” which depicts the sense of depression in a fresh manner.
The song was written when Beihold was gaining traction in her music career but couldn’t feel anything, according to her.
“I created ‘Numb Little Bug’ when I had a song called ‘Groundhog Day’ that was going viral and all of a sudden all these labels were talking to me and all my dreams were coming true,” she explained.
Em also revealed that she was starting antidepressants at the time, which made her “emotionally flat line.”
“I didn’t understand it took both the highs and lows,” she explained.
It’s no surprise that the song received over 1.5 million likes and 6.4 million views on Tiktok, thanks to a catchy music and lyrics like “Do you ever get a little bit tired of life, like you’re not really happy, but you don’t want to die, like a numb little bug that’s gotta survive?”
Em Beihold has been writing since she was seven years old as a way to “sort out my thoughts.” She is known for writing about the minor details of growing up and making them approachable. She draws influence from a variety of sources, including Regina Spektor. As a result, we have an artist who can put a positive gloss on even the worst aspects of growing up.
“It’s not a conscious decision; I always write about how I’m feeling,” she explained. “And I didn’t feel anything at the moment.” I was traveling down a highway, attempting to put into words how I was feeling. I didn’t want to die, but I just wanted to put life on hold,” she said.
Em was approached by filmmaker Michelle Schumacher to produce a “Not Who We Were” for her film I’m Not Here, starring Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons, before striking it big on Tiktok with “City of Angels.” A year later, the song was featured on her debut album, Infrared. Following “City of Angels,” “Groundhog Day” received critical acclaim, with the teaser garnering 20 million views on social media and the song garnering over 6.6 million Spotify streams.
Em just hopes to continue writing now that her career has taken off in the new normal, with her major ambition being to be able to perform on Saturday Night Live.
“After ‘Numb Little Bug,’ there’s definitely pressure since I didn’t anticipate it to be as popular as it was, but my main career ambition is to perform on Saturday Night Live; I don’t have a specific timeline for myself, so hopefully that happens one day,” she says.
“Numb Little Bug” by Em Beihold is now available to stream on Spotify and other digital music platforms.
