Darkmaterial has brought forth their latest single, Evil Before My Eyes recorded in Pyramid Studios in Reading, released last July.
First track, “Evil Before My Eyes” is a gritty, and blazing piece that gets adrenaline filling in the void of your soul. Just from the energetic performance of Ian Larsson and their thick vocals, you can find yourself feeling every word. With thumping drums and grazing guitars, he sings frustratedly about growing up to find the world utterly cutthroat and evil. What really elevates the song, though, are the refrains of “Woah” that will have you singing along.
“Money and Fame” directs the single to the metallic force as it thrashes us from the very first moment with gnarly distorted guitar driving us to the edge. With playful, catchy bouts of sharp, rhyming lines like “Jealous, you’re mad and you’re terribly sad/Cause I have it, I want it, I need it, I’ve got it” surprising us, darkmaterial intrigues us.
Completing the single is the fiery and menacing “Ambition” with Larsson’s guitar shreds gnarling and smirking to no end while splitting drum beats of Sam Sutton get our hearts pounding and renewing with motivation. Ian Larsson’s deep, sharp voice is dramatic, theatrical and animated as he articulates each line and brings ambition to life. The lyrics are surprisingly at par with the music as it metaphorically and powerfully motivate.
