Melbourne heavy rock band Groove Vultures has released their self-titled EP this May 3, and the narrative song, “What happened to Lucy” from the EP has piqued our interest for its viscous virulence and compassionate angst.
“What happened to Lucy” starts with an outburst of heavily thumping drums steadily building momentum and splashing cymbals firing up sparks. All the while churning, bluesy guitars roil up the tension over the intimidating, grungey rhythm. They drive the song forward with a dark, funky vibe.
Intense, deep and energetic vocals come all the way out swinging and articulating the lyrics with wild abandon. The delivery really brings out the harsh implications expounded in the lyrics. The song is the very well-known story of the straight A, bright student hitting the bottom and losing her way as the singer sings, “They used to call you juicy lucy/Because you were full of punch/I had a dream of what you could become/I wanted you to be the one, Lucy.”
As for the bridge, it’s going to make you roll your eyes all the way back to your head with the guitar solo. Plus, the break can really help you soak in the depth of the story. His voice returns, reaching new heights as he soars into the sky at the top of his voice.
While hard-hitting, intense, catchy and roiling, it’s also nostalgic both contextually and musically. Hats off to the rock quartet for making this happen. Stay tuned, because 2 new singles are on the way to you!
