LA rapper Doza, also known as Anthony Mendoza, has officially ended his two-year hiatus and come back with “Poster Child.” Released this July 9, his empowering single, “Poster Child” gives you the best of boom bap and also nostalgically refers back to his previous music. With almost 23k monthly listeners on Spotify, Doza shows us why he deserves a spot in music.
The song begins with a relaxing, warm organ wailing over immersive music shimmering in the distance, widening the whole aural field. With a drum roll running in, Doza’s high voice finally emerges, sharp, precise, grave and unstoppable. He raps relentlessly with a purpose and hits each word and line with confidence and assertion. What’s even better is that each syllable is so well articulated, that you can comprehend the line, as well as whatever he is implying.
Here are some of Doza’s standout lines: “Cause it really don’t matter if I’m kinda gifted/If this shit don’t pop off then it’s what I gotta live with.” There’s something so moody and smug about his lyrics that you will get hooked to the flow and keep coming for more, especially when you are down low.
The steady beating drums get us nodding to the rhythm while coinciding with his delivery. They hit just hard enough to maintain the groove and keep up the momentum, however, it’s Doza who ends up shining the brightest because he veers the spotlight towards him and his message. The immersive music really helps us meditate on his lines. So “Poster Child” is brilliant in all aspects.
