With the release of NorthSide, Sydney-based producer and DJ SangLien cements his place as one of Australia’s most intriguing underground electronic acts. Known for his androgynous flair, theatrical live sets, and hypnotic visual identity, SangLien has curated another effortless experience with this one. Spanning UK garage, liquid bass, funk, and trip-hop, NorthSide is a genre-skipping, groove-heavy soundscape.
The opener, “FunkStep,” kicks things off with irresistible energy. Layers of glimmering percussion and steady, building beats set the tone, but it’s the sudden plunge into deep, booming EDM pulses that really pulls you in. The song is kinetic and cool. It’s perfect for both headphone introspection and dancefloor swaying.
“Back To Me (Eva’s Song)” slows things down in the most seductive way. It opens with a high, silky voice singing tenderly, floating over minimalist melodies and smooth, sparkling instrumentation. Then comes a rich vocal swell, “I can feel it / Come back to me,” delivered with a soul-soaked passion that elevates the entire track. The sense of longing is stitched into every beat and breath, making it as emotionally rich as it is sonically slick.
“Flow This Way,” featuring Emily Harkness, is perhaps the most immediately magnetic track. It opens with a tight, punchy rhythm. Harkness’s voice glides effortlessly, luscious and siren-like, dripping sensuality with every airy syllable. She lures you into the beat while the production remains crisp and fluid, echoing SangLien’s signature style of refined chaos.
For fans of genre-blurring electronica, NorthSide is a bold, stylish, and immersive must-listen. Listen to it on Spotify.
