El Sam’s latest single, “Death in Disguise,” is a slow-burning, dark-pop seduction. Something is mesmerizing in the way El Sam pairs emotional chaos with cinematic calm, singing like someone long since surrendered to the danger of desire, yet still needs to tell the story.
The opening line, “Rhythm is a dancer / One way ticket to the end,” sets the tone for a track that blends physicality with fatalism. El Sam’s tender, touching, emotional voice comes singing smoothly, effortlessly, without urgency, relaxingly, from line to line, word to word, leaving us in a spell. But his lyrics portray the urgency, only for him, as per his delivery, it’s a constant, a normal, that leaves him and all of us dazed and hypnotized. The music sharpens over him as the beats offer a steady groove.
The production is minimal, yet layered, as waves of synths shimmer in the background. The lyrics cut through that haze with clarity, exploring emotional vulnerability under the guise of seduction. The lines, “They’re following me / So they can cut me with the waves of your love, I’m bleeding,” evoke the beauty of a slow unraveling.
By the time the chorus hits, “Go on and dance for me in the night,” you’re on the edge of the dancefloor. On the brink of falling. Caught between attraction and self-destruction. It’s a bold moment, cinematic in its restraint.
Following the successes of “Love You Harder” and “Lies,” El Sam has become boundary-less. Check out “Death in Disguise” if you love Woodkid(my personal favorite) and Weeknd(also my favorite).
