Dr. M. steps into the spotlight with Follow Me, a nine-track debut that puts its own spin on a curious hybrid: Adult Metal, where the polished emotionality of Adult Contemporary meets the weight and drama of heavy metal. Written and produced by the 39-year-old self-employed musician, the album brings together programmed instrumentation, live contributions from additional musicians, and the expressive vocals of Maria Moon across all nine songs. Dr. M. handles the mixing himself, while Grammy-winning mastering engineer Svante Forsbäck gives the finished record its final sheen.
The title track, “Follow Me,” eases listeners in rather than charging through the door. Deep bass gives the arrangement a steady foundation while slow, measured beats create a deliberate pulse. Over it, Moon’s gentle yet sensual voice sings with soulful ardor, delivering a promise of devotion.
By track five, the atmosphere takes a considerably darker turn. “On The Foggy Way Back Home” begins with rain and distant owl hoots, immediately conjuring a lonely nighttime journey. A heavy, trailing rhythm keeps pulling the listener deeper into the unfolding story, while the drums eventually begin thumping with greater force. Then the guitars storm in, turning the previously eerie landscape into something much more imposing. Moon rises above the growing instrumental weight, giving the track a dramatic sense of escalation.
The album closes on its most expansive journey. “Shanghai Night” begins delicately with wind chimes, birds, and a passing breeze before oriental strings introduce the setting. Gradually, heavier instrumentation takes over, with grinding guitars and thumping beats supporting Moon’s steady, folksy delivery. At eight minutes, the song has plenty of room to develop like an extended tale told late into the night.
What makes Follow Me interesting is its willingness to let tenderness and heaviness coexist. Dr. M. is carving out a middle ground where sensual melodies, cinematic darkness, and heavy instrumentation can share the same room.
