Released on March 14, FUTURISTIC is the latest gem from Baltic Jazz Recordings, the Liverpool-based label founded by Grammy-winning producer Steve Levine. Teaming up with Maevey, an artist with an ethereal voice and poetic sensibility, and Mama Terra, the jazz-fusion brainchild of Glaswegian pianist Marco Cafolla, the track offers a fresh, genre-blending vision of modern jazz.
Opening with a cool, catchy groove, FUTURISTIC brings an atmosphere of calm immersion. The production is clean, spacey, and rich with textural detail. Maevey’s vocals are the soul of the track, gliding from soft, sensual whispers into bold, soulful highs. The beautifully fluid arc to her performance is that she sounds effortless, yet emotionally resonant.
As the beat subtly intensifies, ethereal backing vocals drift into the mix, adding layers of atmosphere. The bridge is dreamlike and dramatic, with horns swooping in like a plot twist, evoking a sense of mystery and cinematic flair. Toward the end, a blend of robotic textures and vocoder effects usher in the track’s close, giving it a retro-futurist flair that nods to Herbie Hancock’s Sunlight and Robert Glasper’s genre-defying soul-jazz explorations.
The chemistry among the trio—Maevey, Mama Terra, and Levine—is palpable. According to Maevey, this was a project born out of creative freedom, and it shows. Marco’s Rhodes and synth work brings groove and warmth, while Steve’s production ties everything together with a modern sheen and a reverence for vintage soul and jazz.
FUTURISTIC pulses with intention, sophistication, and a hint of cosmic wonder. Hop on the jazz revival train with this piece on Spotify.
