Reetoxa’s “Gown” arrives like a dream you cannot quite shake off. The emotional centerpiece of Soliloquy, the Melbourne-based project, turns one of Jason McKee’s darkest periods into something strangely beautiful, cinematic, and deeply intimate. Recorded with an accomplished ensemble including Jet drummer Peter Marin, Robbie Williams bassist Kit Riley, Men at Work guitarist James Ryan, and backing vocals from The Voice Australia’s Jess McPherson-Riley, the track has the scale of a grand production while retaining the vulnerability of a confession.
The song begins delicately, with gentle chiming guitars establishing an almost weightless atmosphere. Then the cymbals splash into the mix as the drums settle into a measured pulse, giving the arrangement a sense of movement without disturbing its softness. McKee’s voice sits at the centre with remarkable sincerity, carrying the song less like a performance and more like someone recounting something they are still trying to understand. Beneath him, deep strings gradually swell, adding layer after layer until the track feels almost orchestral in its emotional weight. The Budapest Orchestra’s contribution is particularly effective here, transforming what could have been a straightforward singer-songwriter piece into something much more expansive.
That grandeur makes the story behind “Gown” all the more haunting. Born from a vivid dream during a period when McKee felt his career and personal life were collapsing, the song follows a mysterious woman in a gold gown who carries him away from his reality, only to transform into something darker before returning him home. There is something almost mythological about the imagery: escape becomes danger, danger becomes peace, and eventually reality comes crashing back.
At the end of the day, “Gown” succeeds because it makes despair feel cinematic. With its shimmering guitars, swelling strings, restrained percussion, and tender vocals, Reetoxa turns a deeply personal nightmare into an unexpectedly gorgeous piece of music.
