Dark Pop has a dark way of alluding to reality. And Magdalia makes it even darker with balanced instrumentation of hard pop beats, drums, synth waves, and her low soulful soprano vocals in her new single, Great Expectations. On the 25th of November last year, she released a dark-pop track with extraordinary vocals hitting out for the chorus: And great expectations can only get you so far/ When you become something else/ Instead of who you are.
The sudden soprano belting in the chorus is a great contrast to the first verse, which begins with a deep low register of her philosophy. Great Expectations was formulated during the pandemic in 2021, and it quickly became a favorite among her acquaintances. Magdalia’s songwriting skills are up to par. Her evocative and melodious vocals and their great range, though, are what set her apart. / Great expectations only lead to heartache/ There’s nothing left to lose/ When there’s nothing left to break.
In Great Expectations, Magdalia sings about how much society expects from you and how it can only get you so far, especially since quarantine when many of us struggled to get back on our feet. Magdalia sings from her own experience of missing significant milestones in a year which consequently leads to her feeling left behind. She continually refutes great expectations as she loses sight of what she’s meant to be since there’s nothing left to give and nothing left to see
