Glasgow-based indie, jazz and funk band Speak Easy Circus has delivered a thought-provoking yet incredibly catchy musical gem with their latest offering, “Gros Michel,” released on July 21st. This five-piece band, comprised of talented musicians from diverse backgrounds, combines their strengths to create a dynamic and musically rich experience.
The track’s foundation is built on the engaging guitar melodies that serve as both an introduction and a backbone throughout. Meanwhile, the instrumental arrangement, consisting of rock drums, soulful bass, funk trombone, and jazz saxophone, provides a versatile and multi-dimensional backdrop for the rich rendering. As the song unfolds, the instrumental layers sparkle with a funky energy that’s both invigorating and infectious.
What truly sets “Gros Michel” apart is its deep and rich vocal performance. Sung charmingly, the vocals inject the song with an authentic and heartfelt quality. The lyrics, however, take this song beyond mere musical entertainment. Written by songwriter Jack Avison, they delve into the less-explored subject of the banana industry’s exploitation. Avison’s thoughtful lyrics showcase his perceptivity and concern for these critical issues, revealing a layer of consciousness that goes beyond the usual musical fare.
“Gros Michel” is more than just a catchy tune – it’s a conscious musical creation that invites listeners to reflect on important global issues. Speak Easy Circus has given us a piece of their mind and illustrated their objectivity within the realms of music that captivates the ear and encourages thought and conversation.
