Haag the Huge is a sonic marvel born from over seven years of experimentation that defies genre conventions. This five-track EP serves as both a celebration of Haag’s past performances and a bold step forward, unveiling a fresh track, “Permeable Isolation,” alongside reimagined live staples.
“Alpha Grade” is a dynamic opener that opens with crisp background noise. The gritty, lush guitar riffs that follow will have you rolling your eyes to the back. The drums bustle with a catchy beat that will get your head bobbing, while the trailing guitar on top will leave you swooning. The unpredictable energy of the guitars, combined with the consistent rhythm, creates an engaging combo that keeps you focused and listening as if the instruments possess their own voice.
The song, “Glows In Blue” literally glows with shimmering chords layered with melodic riffs till it splashes with bustling cymbals. The guitar bends hypnotically over the immersive ambient music and meaningfully momentous beats. The music contemplates and dreams, reminiscent of a child in a reverie.
The album closes with the titular “Haag the Huge” and its vibrant, smug rhythms. It beats with a suave sexiness and dynamically changes directions to shimmery roads and then bends to melodic riffs. The music makes us anticipate what’s coming, with the beats falling slowly like tramping huge feet. Then the guitars come fuzzily and grittily grinding in the bridge and setting us for a churning wall of sound that sparkles and dissipates. Not to worry, the song continues to switch up till the end, keeping you in constant consciousness.
Haag the Huge is an ambitious and compelling release that cements Haag’s reputation as an innovator in instrumental rock. Check it out on Spotify.
