Collapsed Tower’s album “Happiness is Transient, Melancholy is Permanent” is a captivating exploration of heavy music masterfully crafted by the talented artist Dariusz Slowikowski. Having seemingly deft hands at work, Slowikowski, under the moniker Collapsed Tower, takes on all aspects of the music, from composition to recording and production. Being a one-man army at play, the composition results in a deeply personal, coherent, and immersive experience.
Drawing influence from bands like Neurosis, AmenRa, Brutus, The Armed, Pigs x7, and A. A. Williams, Collapsed Tower’s album showcases a combination of doom metal and hardcore punk in its tracks with which the artist delivers a unique approach to the music. With Slowikowski’s introspection and feelings converted to musical melodies in the instrumental album, the music speaks for itself in a language of its own.
The introductory track, “The Discomfort Zone,” presents a play of words, and what I gather from the tracks is that they represent emotions and feelings. The distorted guitar blitzing the first track is instantly continued with a pattering of drums giving the song just enough oomph in the darkness. It’s also interesting how the song “Consuming Void” starts on a slow note, only to build to a crescendo with a full burst of thundering guitars. With the last track, “Regardless,” a refrain of glimmering guitar chords sets the album to a slow sleep.
It is a musical journey that encourages listeners to immerse themselves in the beauty of the music and find solace within its cathartic embrace. So let yourself be absorbed by the heaviness of the album “Happiness is Transient, Melancholy is Permanent” by Collapsed Tower.
