When it comes to mad scientists of music, few have harnessed the power of Rock quite like Professor B. Miller and his unconventional lead singer, SPO-20. Together, they’ve given us the gift of Satanic Puppeteer Orchestra, a band that quenches our insatiable thirst for all things Rock, whether it’s Metal, Surfpunk, Ska, Synth-wave, or, believe it or not, Christmas carols.
Their tenth album, “Have an Existential Crisis,” part of a grand quest to release twenty albums on vinyl, is a mind-bending journey that’s candidly titled. This album takes a rather unique twist. Professor Miller has not only enlisted a talented group of human guest singers but has also crafted an experience that challenges the very notion of control over music.
Here’s where things get intriguing. There are 14 tracks on the album, but only seven songs. Each song has two versions – one with a robot singer and one with a human vocalist. The vinyl edition of “Have an Existential Crisis” is pressed with parallel grooves. This means that as you spin the record, you relinquish control over which version you’ll hear.
But it’s not just about the music; it’s the thematic depth that makes “Have an Existential Crisis” truly special. Beyond that, the album surprises intrepid listeners with a hidden digital dub version, adding yet another layer of intrigue.
With “Have an Existential Crisis,” Satanic Puppeteer Orchestra showcases their innovative spirit. The album’s eclectic mix of styles ensures there’s something for every open-minded music enthusiast. If you’re looking for an immersive and imaginative musical experience, this album is a must-listen.
