The Indian Pop Sensation, Kamakshi Khanna has brought aid for all the hopeless romantics and the heartbroken with her ingenious 4-track EP, Heartbreak 2020.
The opener “I Blew It!” is a dreamy, shimmering pop song about awkwardness around crushes. What really uplifts this relatable anthem, is Khanna’s silky smooth and rich voice dripping with vulnerability. It’s a great thing when such divine vocals come down to earth to relate and move us mortals, showing how powerfully gifted a woman’s softest corners can be.
“Love Is Not A Fucking Game” is a heartfelt, intimate song wrapped in acoustic guitars and piano. The first half gave us a whispered, tender and cathartic reflection of the betrayals. The next half has her surging her range effortlessly to release her pain. I was totally swooned and breathless when her voice swayed in her sense of empowerment as she asserted that love is not “an escape” that leaves you “empty” in its rush.
The next song, “Tourist,” brings some folksy charm with glinting strumming guitars and chiming melodies. It helps Khanna see what her lover really was, yet she wishes he didn’t take her on the “Ferris wheel” and the “magic train” only to leave her high and dry.
We finally arrive at the title track—literally, a catchy, soulful bop with thumping head-nodding drums that gets you relating and reeling to our romantic fantasies against a heartbreaking crisis “in 2020.” However, we see a transformation of the artist who learnt how to “be alone” and “feel at home,” thanks to her 2020 heartbreak.
Listen to Kamakshi Khanna present her most intimate self and most moving musicality with Heartbreak 2020, a must-listen for any pop music lover out there.
